Seismic Testing
CRTC partnered with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and Washington State University to develop and test a relocatable Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) shelter made from thermally modified Coastal Western Hemlock.
In November 2024, the 600-square-foot prototype underwent full-scale seismic testing at ERDC’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory. The shelter was assembled from two shipping containers in just two days and tested on a three-dimensional shake table under extreme seismic and snow-load conditions.
The successful test validated the shelter’s structural connections and demonstrated the potential of thermally modified wood and CLT to create durable, resilient, and rapidly deployable structures. Because the shelter can be transported, assembled, disassembled, and relocated, the system has applications ranging from military and emergency housing to communities facing natural disasters and climate-related challenges.
