Sustainable Timber

Species with Extraordinary Potential

Sustainable Timber

We source a variety of timber, including Coastal Western Hemlock, Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and other regional species, with a focus on responsible sourcing and maximizing the value of every board.

Through thermal modification, robotic grading, and advanced manufacturing, we’re able to process timber more efficiently while creating high-quality materials for our customers. Every piece of wood goes through a thoughtful process, from grading and modification to final inspection, ensuring that the material we deliver is carefully handled and held to a high standard.

Grading & Sorting

Our new robotic grading system automatically picks up and evaluates each plank of wood that enters our shop. Boards with excessive knots or other defects can be identified and set aside before they go through thermal modification. Previously, our team thermally modified every board and then manually sorted the material afterward to determine what could be used. By identifying defects earlier in the process, we can save time improve the overall efficiency of our operation. This technology marks another exciting step forward as we continue to improve how we process and manufacture thermally modified wood.

Coastal Western Hemlock

At Stillwood, we believe overlooked resources deserve a second look. More than 30,000 acres of Coastal Western Hemlock grow in Neah Bay, Washington. Historically, this abundant species has been underutilized due to its naturally high moisture content, limiting its use in traditional lumber markets.

Through thermal modification and cross-lamination, Stillwood transforms Coastal Western Hemlock into durable, dimensionally stable wood with rich natural character. The result is a high-performance material designed for builders, architects, woodworkers, and designers, unlocking the full potential of this remarkable Pacific Northwest resource.
